Namibias Kalahari Desert - a stunning location for trophy hunting

The Kalahari Desert lies to the east of Namibia and was formed by the erosion of soft stone formations and was shaped by the wind into the typical sand ridges. Typical of the Kalahari are the magnificent red sand dunes, which are formed by a thin layer of red iron oxide that covers each grain of sand. Some areas can enjoy quite a good rainfall and therefore might be covered with grass after such a good season. The red parallel dunes with wind-shaped sand ridges were stabilised through vegetation and are so typical of the landscape in the Kalahari. As there is more vegetation in the Kalahari Desert than in the Namib Desert, a wider variety of fauna occurs here.

A strange, yet essential feature of this region are the pans, which are shallow hollows consisting of hard, gray clay. While appearing drab and flat, these pans provide essential salt for the animals of the Kalahari. They vary in size from a few hundred meters to a few square kilometers. There are two other distinct ecosystems found in the central Kalahari region: rich savanna and grasslands. Summer temperatures in the Kalahari range from 20 to 40 °C. In winter, the Kalahari has a dry, cold climate with frosts at night. The low winter temperature can average below 0 °C.
